South Tyrolean speciality apple strudel
A little piece of Merano Advent for your home
The smell of cinnamon, apples and rum wafting from a strudel is the essence of winter in South Tyrol. It's also one of our favourite desserts. Here's a recipe for making it at home, so you can recreate the magical Advent atmosphere of Merano.
Ingredients:
500 g apples
100 g sugar
1 sachet of vanilla sugar,
1 teaspoon of cinnamon,
100 g of sultanas,
100 g breadcrumbs;
1 tablespoon of rum or apple juice and 8 sheets of strudel pastry.
Preparation:
Peel and core the apples, then slice them.
Mix with the sugar, vanilla sugar, cinnamon, sultanas and rum. Leave to infuse.
Preheat the oven to 180°C. Line a baking tray with baking paper. Brush the strudel pastry with melted butter. Sprinkle with breadcrumbs. Arrange the apple mixture, then lift the edges. Gently roll up the strudel and place it on the baking tray.
Brush with butter. Bake for 30–35 minutes. Leave to cool, then cut into slices.
Sprinkle with icing sugar.
Enjoy!
