Waalwege – hiking along the irrigation channels

Waalwege – hiking paths for connoisseurs
Ripple, murmuring and gurgling

Anyone who hikes along a waalweg for the first time will not forget this wonderful experience.

Waalwege count to the special features of the hiking area Merano and Environs and the Val Venosta. The area is quite sunny and thus poor of precipitations; we count 300 sunny days in the year. The farmers therefore managed over centuries with complex systems of trickles and irrigation channels, which brought the water from the glacial streams to the fields. The water flows over many kilometers trough concaved trunks, in rocks carved out channels and earth supply ditches. To maintain these channels, small paths were built which ran along the waterline – the well-known “waalwege”. Today, the “waalwege” count to the most popular destinations of the region and are mostly favored by kids. The water is maximal at knee-height and therefore perfect to let small wood ships glide into the water or to rest tired legs after walking.
